Founded in 2009, the company has pursued a consolidation strategy of acquiring regional agencies across the United States. As of 2024, independent business reporting placed Hilb’s annual revenue at about US$650 million and noted more than 180 completed acquisitions since its founding.[2] *Business Insurance* has ranked Hilb among the top 25 largest U.S. insurance brokers by brokerage revenue.[3]

History

Hilb Group was founded in 2009 by Robert Hilb in Richmond, Virginia.[4] The company grew through a roll-up strategy, acquiring independent insurance agencies in multiple states.[5][6]

In 2015, private equity firm ABRY Partners acquired a majority stake.[7] In December 2019, ABRY sold Hilb to The Carlyle Group. At the time of the Carlyle deal, Hilb operated from more than 90 offices nationwide.[8]

Recent developments

In November 2024, Richmond BizSense reported that Hilb had secured a new US$500 million credit facility to finance further acquisitions, bringing total company revenue to approximately US$650 million and its deal count above 180 since inception.[1] The same year, *Insurance Journal* reported that Hilb refinanced nearly US$2 billion in credit facilities to expand capacity.[9]

Rankings

In Business Insurance’s 2024 “Top 100 Brokers of U.S. Business,” Hilb ranked 23rd with US$641 million in brokerage revenue.[3]
