Himanshu Bajpai
Himanshu Bajpai is an Indian artist and writer. He is well known for Dastangoi which is an ancient form of oral storytelling in Urdu, performed by either one or two people, that originated in pre-Islamic Arabia in the 13th century[1], and was extremely popular among the elites and commoners of Delhi and Lucknow. It has been revived by scholars like Himanshu who have added a unique element of their own socio-cultural ethos and bring a new flavour to the lost tales. He is an expert in the oral culture of Lucknow. A storehouse of Urdu and Hindi poetry and Lucknowwa folk stories, Himanshu has completed his PhD thesis on the Awadh Akhbar published by the Naval Kishore Press of Lucknow.
His Dastangoi on the most famous Urdu poet of Lucknow Majaz [2] has been acclaimed by lovers of Urdu poetry.
His latest Dastangoi [3] on the famous Kakori episode called Dastan-e-Tamanna-e-Sarfaroshi is getting rave reviews from audiences[4].
Himanshu was born and brought up in the storied by-lanes of old Lucknow and started his career in journalism; worked with organisations like All India Radio, Dainik Bhaskar and Tehelka in the past.
He is the author of 'Qissa Qissa Lucknowwa' a book on Lucknow, published by Rajkamal Prakashan. He has also translated two children's books into Hindi - 'Madhuban ka Nanha Mor' and 'Northway ka Yuddh'. [5]
