History of the Laliga
La Liga, officially called the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, is the highest professional football league in Spain. It was established in 1929 and is considered one of the most successful and popular football leagues in the world.[1]
Background
Before La Liga was created, football in Spain was mainly played through regional competitions. During the 1920s, football became more organized and popular across the country. Spanish football officials and club representatives later agreed to create a national league competition.
The first La Liga season started in 1929 with ten clubs participating.[2]

La Liga was suspended between 1936 and 1939 because of the Spanish Civil War. During that period, many football activities stopped across the country. Some players joined military service while others left Spain because of the conflict.[4]
The competition returned in 1939 after the war ended.
Growth of the League
In the 1940s and 1950s, clubs such as Valencia, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid became very successful in Spanish football.[5]
Real Madrid became internationally famous during the 1950s with players like Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás. The club won several league titles and also performed strongly in European competitions.[6]
Barcelona also developed into one of the strongest clubs in Spain, especially during the years influenced by Johan Cruyff as both a player and manager.[7]
Modern Era
From the 1990s, La Liga gained more international attention through television broadcasting and the arrival of famous football players from different countries.
The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, known as El Clásico, became one of the most watched football matches in the world.
Several famous footballers played in La Liga, including Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Zinedine Zidane.[8]
Spanish clubs also achieved major success in European competitions during the 2000s and 2010s.
League Format
La Liga currently has 20 clubs. Every team plays 38 matches in a season, facing each opponent twice, once at home and once away.[9]
The top 3 clubs with the lowest points at the end of the season are relegated to the Segunda División, while the top 5 teams qualify for European competitions.
Legacy
La Liga is known for its technical style of football, historic clubs, and worldwide supporters. Real Madrid has won the highest number of league titles, while Lionel Messi remains the league’s all-time top scorer.[8]
Today, La Liga remains one of the most followed football leagues globally.
