Although there was speculation that Robinson might choose not to sign with the Spurs and to become a free agent once his Navy commitment ended, Robinson decided in the end to come to San Antonio for the 1989–90 season.
The Spurs began 1989-90 season with a record of 8—5 in November. In midseason the Spurs acquired Rod Strickland from the New York Knicks for Maurice Cheeks.

On June 25, 1997 the Spurs selected Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest University with the first pick.
