HoSt Energy Systems is a Dutch manufacturer of renewable energy systems, headquartered in Enschede, Netherlands. The company designs, builds, and maintains installations for converting organic waste into biogas, biomethane, heat, power, and liquefied CO₂. It is a subsidiary of the HoSt Group, a privately held family company.
History
HoSt was founded in 1991 as a joint venture between Holec Projects and Stork, two Dutch energy system suppliers.[1] In 1999 the company became an independent business, focusing solely on biomass processing systems and sustainable energy generation.[1]
The company was established by Herman Klein Teeselink and remained under family ownership.[2] In 2020, Jelle Klein Teeselink joined the management team and subsequently became CEO.[2][3] Under his leadership, the company's annual revenue grew from approximately €50 million to over €170 million and the number of employees increased from around 150 to more than 550.[3] In 2024, HoSt Group was named Het Gaafste Bedrijf van Nederland ("The Coolest Company in the Netherlands") by the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad.[3]
Products and services
HoSt offers a portfolio of renewable energy systems across several technology areas:
Biogas plants
HoSt designs and builds anaerobic digestion plants that process organic waste streams including agricultural residues, food industry waste, manure, and municipal organic waste. The company supplies both farm-scale and industrial-scale plants on a turnkey basis, providing services including feasibility studies, engineering, installation, commissioning, and long-term service and maintenance.[1]
Biogas upgrading and biomethane
HoSt has developed proprietary biogas upgrading technology that purifies biogas into biomethane suitable for injection into gas grids or use as vehicle fuel.[1] The company also produces systems for bio-CNG and bio-LNG production.
Biomass and waste-fired boiler plants
HoSt manufactures industrial boiler plants that generate heat and power from biomass, waste-derived fuels (RDF), and wood waste. These systems can be integrated with carbon capture technology.
CO₂ liquefaction and carbon capture
HoSt offers plants that recover and liquefy carbon dioxide produced during anaerobic digestion, enabling its reuse as food-grade liquid CO₂ or in industrial applications.[3]
Research and development
HoSt operates a full-scale research facility called Wabico in Waalwijk, Netherlands, where it tests and optimises renewable gas technologies before commercial deployment.[2] The company holds several patented technologies.[2]
Operations
As of 2024, HoSt has completed more than 450 projects in over 35 countries across five continents, with offices in the Netherlands, United States, France, Germany, Poland, Latvia, and England.[2]
Notable projects include:
- A biogas plant at Charlton Park Estate in Malmesbury, England, producing biomethane for injection into the UK national gas grid
- A biomethane upgrading project for Grolsch in the Netherlands, converting wastewater treatment biogas into biomethane for use in the brewing process[4]
- Supply of biogas and RNG technology for Global NRG Renewables' distillery waste project in Louisville, Kentucky, in partnership with Bright Renewables North America[5]
- Five large-scale biogas facilities in Spain in partnership with Five Bioenergy, incorporating biogas upgrading and CO₂ liquefaction[6]
- A biogas plant for FrieslandCampina in the Netherlands
- A wood-fired combined heat and power plant for Ikea Industry in Poland[7]
