Dr. Hoa Nghiem

Hoa Nghiem (in Vietnamese: Nghiêm Thị Minh Hoà) is a Vietnamese theoretical physicist and vice director of Phenikaa Institute for Advanced Study (PIAS) in Vietnam. Her research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly non-equilibrium strongly correlated systems and many-body systems.[1][2]

Education[edit]

Hoa earned her bachelor's degree in physics from the College of Science, Vietnam National University - Hanoi. She earned her master and Ph.D. in Applied Physics at Osaka University in Japan with the group of Wilson Agerico Diño. Her doctoral dissertation's topic was "Kondo Screening and Magnetic Ordering – Study of Magnetic Adatoms on a Metal Surface". After her Ph.D., she went on to work as a postdoctoral fellow at Jülich Research Center in Germany.

Research and career[edit]

After her postdoctoral work in Jülich, she returned to Vietnam and joined the Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (AIST).[1] She then transitioned to work at Phenikaa Institute for Advanced Study (PIAS), establishing the Quantum Materials Group at PIAS in 2019.[3]

Hoa is a theoretical physicist studying condensed matter physics, particularly strongly correlated systems out of equilibrium. In particular, she has published multiple papers on Kondo impurity system in response to a quench, the transient dynamics and the non-equilibrium steady-state using the time-dependent numerical renormalization group method. She also studies the theory of time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and the non-equilibrium dynamical mean field theory, as well as uses Mie theory of light scattering on micro spheres to modify optical constants of metamaterials.[4]

Awards and achievements[edit]

In 2019, Hoa Nghiem was one of two scientists nominated for the "under 35" category of the Ta Quang Buu prize [vi], the greatest Vietnamese honor for excellence in scientific research.[5]
