Holly K. Gibbs is an American geographer, land system scientist and professor in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on integrating spatial analysis, AI, remote sensing, big data and econometrics to answer applied questions regarding human-environment interactions, land use change, commodity supply chains and policy. She is the Gaylord Nelson Distinguished Chair and she leads the Global Land Use and Environment Lab (GLUE).

Education

Gibbs attended the Ohio State University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources in 1999, receiving a degree of distinction, and her Master of Science degree in 2001..[1] She then worked as a Post-Master Research Associate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for two years with a focus on agriculture, water cycles and remote sensing. After this, she moved on to pursue her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008, where she worked under Jonathan Foley studying pathways of tropical land use and their implication for carbon emissions.[1]

Career

After completing her PhD, Gibbs worked with Eric Lambin and Rosamond L. Naylor as a David H. Smith Conservation Post-Doctoral Research Fellow[2] at Stanford University from 2008 to 2011, where she led research on U.S. biofuels policies and implications in carbon balance and conservation.[3]

She joined UW-Madison in 2011 as a split professor between the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the Geography department;[4] in 2024, her appointment shifted fully to the Nelson Institute, where she is part of the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment. She was promoted to associate professor in 2016 and to full professor in 2020. In 2025 she was appointed the Gaylord Nelson Distinguished Chair.[5]

She has also co-founded Land Conservation Association,[citation needed] an NGO focused on sustainable land use and commodity production, and she is the Co-creator of VISIPEC,[citation needed] a cattle supply-chain traceability tool used by the Brazilian government and major food companies.

Research

Gibbs research focuses on the intersection between land use, deforestation, agricultural supply chains (soy, cattle, palm oil) and conservation. Her work integrates remote sensing, spatial analysis, big data, and econometrics to better understand land-cover change, the environmental impact of commodity production, and conservation policy effectiveness.[citation needed]

Her studies have investigated critical topics such as the link between cattle supply chains and deforestation in the tropics, particularly the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado, including rancher and slaughterhouse compliance with the forest code and zero-deforestation agreements.[6][7] She has examined carbon emissions embedded in cropland expansion and tropical commodity production[8] and the pervasion of modern slave work in the agricultural sector.[9]

Gibbs has also researched the effectiveness and limitations of supply-chain sustainability interventions, including the impact of the Amazon Soy Moratorium on forest conservation[10] and broader zero-deforestation commitments.[6] Her work often highlights issues like leakage (where deforestation shifts elsewhere rather than stopping)[11] as well as certification schemes (e.g., palm oil certification in Indonesia).[12]

Gibbs has done significant work on U.S. biofuel policy and land-use change, including studies on cropland expansion,[13] conversion of grasslands/prairie to cropland,[14] and the indirect land-use change consequences of biofuel mandates.[15]

Her early work established foundational global datasets and estimates of tropical deforestation,[16] biomass carbon stocks,[17] and land-use dynamics[18] that became widely used baselines in the field.

More recently, Gibbs' research has developed methods to apply AI-based modeling, big data analytics, and remote sensing to improve supply-chain transparency and enforcement, such as her work using deep learning approaches to detect cattle in deforestation embargoes, addressing longstanding enforcement gaps in monitoring mobile herds.[19]
