Home Premiere
Home Premiere (sometimes home premiere) is a premium video-on-demand program in which films that are concurrently being shown in theaters can be rented for viewing in the home. The program was first announced in 2011 by four participating film studios - Warner Bros, Sony, Universal, and 20th Century Fox. Two months after their initial theatrical release, customers of satellite television provider DirecTV and cable companies like Comcast would be able to rent the films for a viewing period of 2-3 days at a price of $30. The Home Premiere brand was built with the assistance of the trade organization Digital Entertainment Group which also helped Hollywood launch the DVD and Blu-ray formats.[1][2]
In 2020, several films were released early on Home Premiere at a rental price of $20 in response to theaters shutting down to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic - Universal's The Invisible Man and The Hunt, Focus Features' Emma, and Disney's Onward were among the first.[3]
