Homeboy Loud Couture
Homeboy Loud Couture is a privately owned clothing brand started by German surfer and entrepreneur Jürgen Wolf in 1988.[1] Founded in Frankfurt, Germany, the company was an early manufacturer of streetwear.[2] Originally started as a clothing company for the skateboard scene, Homeboy has branched out into the streetwear, hip-hop and extreme sports scenes.[1]
The brand was discontinued in 2002 after the dot-com crash.[3] In 2015, Jürgen Wolf and son Julian Wolf relaunched Homeboy Loud Couture with headquarters in Heusenstamm, Germany.[4] The company offers apparel for men and women and has announced a shoe collection for summer 2019.[5]
History[edit]
The company founder Jürgen Wolf started working at a surf shop in 1978 and witnessed the early beginnings of skateboarding and snowboarding.[6] In 1988, Wolf began selling large-sized jeans and t-shirts under the Homeboy name.[1] The brand name was inspired by the English language slang term ’homeboy’ which means ‘friend’, or ‘best friend’.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Homeboy offered jeans, t-shirts, baseball caps, and sneakers with prominent logos. The so-called ‘coach jacket’, a nylon windbreaker with large brand insignia, became a staple in Homeboy collections.[7] Homeboy also sponsored music artists in the 1990s including Die Fantastischen Vier, Wu-Tang Clan and Cypress Hill.[7]
The brand generated sales of over 35 Million euros in the late 1990s.[4] Homeboy Loud Couture stopped operations in 2002 after the dot-com crash and the failed stock market entry of the Cyber Pirates e-commerce platform.[3]
In 2015, Homeboy Loud Couture was relaunched by Jürgen Wolf and son Julian Wolf as license holders through limited liability company License To Thrill with headquarters in Heusenstamm, Germany.[4] The company produces apparel such as T-shirts, pants, hats, and jackets.[7] In December 2016, Homeboy launched a clothing collection aimed at women.[8] A new collection of footwear manufactured by Hummel shoe manufacturing in Germany has been announced for Summer 2019.[7]
