Homeland Study Group Foundation

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Homeland Study Group Foundation is a political organization that came out of Ghana and strives for the independence of the western region, which they call Western Togoland. They claim open autonomy for their region and wish for complete independence from the state of Ghana. The group is not the only secessionist group within Ghana asking for autonomy, but it is the largest. They became relevant on May 9, 2017, as the day they declared their region independent from Ghana.[1] The group has faced legal trouble from the local government for their declaration. The group was founded by Charles Kormi Kudjordjie (1933–2022) who has been continuously arrested on charges of treason throughout his time in the group.[2]

The Homeland Study Group Foundation has been subject to criticism, with people blaming the group for the violence that is caused during the Western Togoland Rebellion. The group claims to be a non-violent entity and asks to declare independence diplomatically. The group is currently under investigation by the Ghanaian government for treasonous activities, and multiple arrests of group members have been made from 2017 to the present. The group has been able to stay out of trouble as the Ghanaian government searches for more evidence to use against the group.[2]

Background

Togoland started as a German protectorate state in 1884 to 1914. Togoland, after World War I, was split amongst France and the British as a mandate from the League of Nations.[3] The two lands would stay separated into French Togoland and British Togoland until the 1950s, when the Ewe ethnic group called for reunification of the two states. Despite the uproar, the trust territory of British Togoland and the Gold Coast was merged into the first independent African state of Ghana. This decision would become the seed for the current rebellion.[2]
