Hominimerdicola is a genus of obligately anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria in the family Oscillospiraceae.[1] The type species is Hominimerdicola aceti, whose type strain was isolated from human feces.[2] The genus contains three species with validly published names.[1]
Taxonomy
The name combines the Latin words homo, meaning a human being, merda, meaning dung, and the suffix -cola, meaning an inhabitant.[1]
The type strain of H. aceti was previously identified as "Ruminococcus bicirculans", a name that was not validly published. Genome-based analyses supported its placement in a separate genus from Ruminococcus.[2][1] The original description assigned Hominimerdicola to the family Ruminococcaceae, whereas the current LPSN classification places it in Oscillospiraceae.[2][1]
In 2026, Hominimerdicola intestinalis was described from human feces and Ruminococcus albus was transferred to the genus as Hominimerdicola alba.[3] Ruminococcus albus is consequently treated as a homotypic synonym of H. alba.[1]
