Honest Mum is an English-language online lifestyle magazine focused on parenting, homemaking, and family interests. The developer, editor, and lead author of Honest Mum is Vicki Psarias, 'who shares her passions: family life, food, film, fashion, beauty and travel... [and] her commitment to helping others feel more confident about themselves... [and] to inspire us to accept ourselves as we are.'.[1].

History[edit]

Honest Mum started as a blog in November 2010, developed during a period when Vicki Psarias was a TV director, filmmaker, and new mother recovering from a traumatic birth experience. The project began as a blog for sharing her experiences with other new mothers facing career re-entry issues from the perspective of a career woman encountering motherhood. She added news items, how-to articles, analysis, and opinions drawn from daily life, supplemented by comments and stories from readers and other contributors. In 2011, she withdrew from her media production activities altogether to concentrate full time on developing Honest Mum into an online lifestyle magazine.

Features[edit]

Honest Mum now covers intricacies of family life, food, film, fashion, consumer tech, and travel. Vicki Psarias and other authors share observations, tips, and family stories via the website.[2] Custom-designed recipes are featured [3] along with event reports and interviews. Notable persons interviewed for the blog include American author and dot-com entrepreneur Seth Godin and British television and radio presenter Fearne Cotton. Blog features are sometimes reprinted by other prominent websites such as Laura Ashley. 'A self-confessed hypochondriac and health-worrier'[4], Psarias has written frankly about her post partem struggles.[5]

Honest Mum features promotional reviews of products and services of interest to mothers such as spa destinations, restaurants, toys, food and restaurants, movies and plays, health and well-being, and beauty and cosmetics).[6]. Reviews of the Honest Mum blog were published in the Yorkshire Evening Post and Hamley's Christmas Special.. Honest Mum has been covered in other popular media including Good Morning Britain, Sky News, and BBC Radio.[7][8][9] In 2017, HuffPost (formerly The Huffington Post), among other publications, wrote about the Honest Mum 'Proud in My Bikini' campaign to encourage women's body-image self-esteem.[10].

Demographics[edit]

As of later 2018, most followers (over 40 per cent) reside in the UK, followed (in order) by North America (over 20 per cent), Australia (four per cent), and Europe plus other locales (about 30 per cent). Each post gets about a thousand "likes" and more than forty comments. The overall audience is about seventy percent female, and 87 per cent range in age from 18 to 44. Top-performing lifestyle themes are beauty, books and literature, sports, and travel.[11]). The Yorkshire Evening Post has written that Psarias's reach via the Honest Mum blog and related social media may be counted in the millions.[12]

Promotion and recognition[edit]

According to Vicki Psarias, just four weeks after its first pages were published on the Web Honest Mum was named a finalist in the Fresh Voice category of the Brilliance in Blogging Awards (the 'BiBs'). This award receives over 200,000 nominations and votes each year to honor parenting and lifestyle bloggers.[13] Honest Mum received Finalist status in 2015, 2016, and 2017 in various categories such as food and lifestyle. In 2016 Honest Mum was shortlisted for the Best of Pinterest UK Food award[14], and in 2017 Honest Mum was a finalist for The Best Lifestyle Enhancement Blogger and VLogger awards.[15]
