Hong Chen (Chinese: 红尘) is a Chinese travel writer and professor at Chongqing Technology and Business University, Sichuan.[1] She is also a self-professed dharmic wanderer.[2]

Education[edit]

Hong graduated from her undergraduate degree in 1986. She then went on to finish her master's degree, graduating in 1989.[3]

In 1996, Hong returned to education, studying English. She then went to St. Cloud State University as a visiting student in 1998. This experience inspired one of her earliest travel books, On the Road: Stories in American Universities.[3]

Career[edit]

Hong worked as a journalist from 1989-1996, rising to the position of chief editor of a newspaper. She founded a female magazine, inspired by the style of the American Reader's Digest.[3]

During her stay in the United States as a visiting student to St. Cloud State University, Hong volunteered with a Living Library programme at elementary schools, where she told stories from Chinese culture. She established a similar programme at Chongqing Technology and Business University with the aim of encouraging attendees to turn themselves into a good book.[4]

Her publication Mouth of a Porcelain Vessel has been adapted into 30-minute televised essays and broadcast by China Central Television.[5]

Philanthropoy[edit]

Hong donated the proceeds from sales of her book, To the Top of the Himalayas on Foot: See You There, to relief efforts for the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.[4]
