The Hope4Josh Foundation is a non profit organization founded on March 9, 2018 and incorporated under the laws of the State of Mississippi[1]. Located in Gulfport, the Hope4Josh Foundation is a recruitment organization for the National Marrow Donor Program's Be The Match Registry of volunteer hematopoietic cell donors and umbilical cord blood units in the United States.

History[edit]

Joshua Cates, a native of Flint, Michigan, was diagnosed in July 2016 with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Having failed conservative treatments, a hematopoietic stem cell transplant was deemed necessary. His older brother, J. Michael, was his HLA match and they began the donation process. Through this process, the brothers discovered that in J. Michael's adopted home of Gulfport, there was a need for a local presence promoting hematopoietic stem cell donor registrations, and they formed the Hope4Josh Foundation. The brothers completed a hematopoietic stem cell transplant on May 18, 2018 at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan.[2][3]

On July 18, 2018, the Foundation was released word that Joshua had passed away that afternoon surrounded by friends and family.[4]

Inaugural Donor Drive[edit]

In conjunction with World Marrow Donor Day, officially September 15, 2018, the Hope4Josh Foundation, National Marrow Donor Program and Memorial Hospital at Gulfport [1] hosted the Inaugural Hope4Josh/BeTheMatch Donor Registration Drive on September 19th. Focusing on patient and healthcare provider education, the event saw seven people join the registry.[5]

Coverage Area[edit]
