Hope Koch, CPA, MBA, Ph.D., is an American academic, researcher, and business professor. She serves as the Godfrey Sullivan Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Information Systems and Business Analytics at Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business.[1]

Early life and education

Koch was the first in her family to attend college. She began her academic journey at a community college before earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Mary Hardin–Baylor. She later received an MBA in Information Systems Management from Baylor University and a Ph.D. in Information & Operations Management from Texas A&M University.[2]

Career

Industry experience

Before entering academia, Koch worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) at McLane Company, Inc., a subsidiary of Walmart and later Berkshire Hathaway, where she served as a staff accountant, tax analyst, and senior auditor.[3]

Academic career

Koch joined the faculty of Baylor University in 1997 as a lecturer and later became an assistant professor in 2003. She was granted tenure in 2010, appointed to the Godfrey Sullivan Endowed Chair in 2016, and named Distinguished Professor in 2023.[1]

At Baylor, Koch teaches management information systems and business analytics and sponsors the university's Association for Information Systems student chapter. She has played a key role in building Baylor's MIS program and fostering partnerships with companies including ExxonMobil, Accenture, USAA, and Deloitte.[4]

Research

Koch's research examines how emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and analytics—affect organizational behavior, resilience, and innovation. Her work has appeared in leading journals including MIS Quarterly, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, European Journal of Information Systems, and the Journal of Strategic Information Systems.

In 2022, the Association for Information Systems selected her paper Realizing Value from Shadow Analytics: A Case Study as one of the top five best papers published in the information systems field.[5]

Philanthropy and community involvement

Koch co-administers the J. L. and Bonnelle Callaway Foundation, which in 2020 contributed $26,000 toward eight $5,000 scholarships for Temple ISD graduates.[6] The foundation awards about $500,000 annually and has provided over $10 million in scholarships since its founding.

She serves on the Board of Trustees of Temple College[7] and the Board of Directors of First National Bank Texas, where she also chairs the Audit Committee.[8]

The Cameron Herald reported that "Kevin and Hope Koch oversee the Callaway Foundation," and in 2024, Callaway Scholars from Yoe High School awarded scholarships to the Class of 2024.[9] Baylor University recognized the Foundation in 2008 for supporting business school students and every scholarship applicant from Yoe High School.[10]

In 2021–2022, Koch and her husband Kevin co-chaired a successful $164 million school bond campaign to improve public schools in Temple, Texas.

Personal life

Hope Koch is married to Kevin Koch. Together, they support education, athletics, and public service initiatives in Central Texas. They have completed several triathlons and mountain climbing expeditions, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2017 and completing the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in 2019.

The Kochs are described as "TriWaco regulars," with Koch placing in the top ten and her husband winning the title multiple times.[11] The Callaway Foundation is listed among the top philanthropic funders in Temple, Texas, with over $500,000 in total giving.[12]
