Casting and portrayal

During the first, second, and third seasons, Hope was portrayed by several babies and toddlers; however, on July 28, 2016, it was announced that Summer Fontana would be portraying a 7-year old Hope.[2] On July 17, 2017, it was announced that for the fifth season Hope would be portrayed by Danielle Rose Russell.[3]

Storylines

The Vampire Diaries

Hope never appeared on The Vampire Diaries; however, she was conceived during the season four episode "Bring It On" and her existence was first revealed four episodes later on The Originals backdoor pilot.[4]

The Originals

Season 1

Hope was mostly mentioned throughout the show's first season and only appeared when she was born in the season finale; however, her existence had an impact in every member of her family during that season. Klaus was initially skeptical about Hope being his daughter, but later it was confirmed that she was actually his daughter when she revealed her vampire side. Elijah believed Hope to be a change for their family to be "normal" and that it would bring the family closer. Hayley was scared and at first wanted to have an abortion, but later she gave up that idea and decided to keep the baby. Rebekah became closer with Hayley because of her pregnancy. When Hope was born her mother was murdered moments after, but with Hope's blood in her system which initiated her transition to a hybrid. In the end it was revealed that Esther, Hope's paternal grandmother, was behind the witches' attack at the newborn Hope, which lead to the Mikaelsons faking her death.[5]

Season 2

In the second season, Hope went to live with her aunt Rebekah in order to hide from the New Orleans witches, but eventually it's discovered that the real reason behind Esther's attack is the fear of a promise made to Hope's paternal great-aunt, Dahlia, in which all firstborn Mikaelsons are promised to Dahlia. When Esther was finally defeated, Dahlia returned to claim Hope for her coven. Not only Dahlia returned, but with her was Freya Mikaelson, the firstborn daughter of Esther. Throughout the rest of the season the Mikaelsons attempt to defeat Dahlia and when they succeed, Hope is finally free to be with her family; however, her mother is cursed by Dahlia to be in her permanent wolf except in the full moon.[6]

Season 3

In the third season, Hope has a minor role and now lives with her father while her mother remains cursed, but eventually Hayley's curse is broken and she is reunited with her mother once again.[7] Throughout the season, a curse threatens the Mikaelsons and despite all their attempts to prevent it, they are unsuccessful and Hope is forced to live the next seven years without her father and his side of the family.[8]
