Horace D. Ballard Jr. (1984-) is an American curator and art historian. He currently serves as the Theodore E. Stebbins Associate Curator of American Art at the Fogg Museum, part of the Harvard Art Museums.[1] Previously, he was the curator of American art at the Williams College Museum of Art.[2][3] He is the first African-American to serve as the stewarding curator of an important public collection of pre-1900 colonial- and early-federal era American painting, sculpture, and design.
Early life and education[edit]
Ballard was born in Virginia and moved often as a child, living in North Carolina and Pennsylvania before college. He attended the University of Virginia where he earned a B.A. in American Studies and English literature. After working at Monticello, he attended Yale University where he was a student at the Institute of Sacred Music and Yale Divinity School, concentrating in religious visual culture. He then received his Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University.[4]
Career[edit]
In 2015 Ballard was appointed Curator of Education at the Birmingham Museum of Art.[5] He has additionally worked at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.[6]
