Horace John Dean (11th September 1876 - 6th February 1943) was an British sailor, When he was 15 years old in 1892, he became an apprentice for the Royal Navy, in 1897 he was awarded his ‘Second Mate’s Competency Certificate’ along with by his ‘First Mate’s Competency Certificate’ in 1900; Master’s and Extra-Master’s in 1902. He married Elizabeth J. G. Steele in 1906, and had their only son, Herbert Dean; in 1908, the family moved to Liverpool in 1910; and in 1911. He is known for being the First Officer aboard RMS Carpathia he played a key role in the evacuation process.

Dean served throughout World War I and World War II, he retired to his home in Wanstead, Essex.
