Hornet is a social networking app and online site geared towards gay, bi, queer and trans men.[1] It runs on iOS and Android devices, and is available to download from the Apple Store and Google Play.

The app acts as a digital home for the LGBTQ community where users can share text, photos, articles and videos, follow other users and engage in conversations through commenting and chat.[2] The Hornet Feed also curates content from editors and leading worldwide LGBT publications.[3]

Hornet is free to download with the option to purchase a premium account to access more features.

As of 2020, Hornet has 25 million users globally, and is the number one gay app in France, Russia, Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan, with an expanding user base in the United States.[4] [5]

History[edit]

Hornet was founded in 2011 by tech entrepreneur Christof Wittig and financier Sean Howell[6] with a goal of “providing quality social interactions with more ways to meet and engage in local gay communities.”[7]

In 2016, Hornet acquired the queer blog Unicorn Booty as well as the gay travel site Vespa to help distinguish the brand away from gay dating apps.[8]

Also, in 2016, Hornet received its first institutional funding of US$ 8 million.[9]

Safety and Security[edit]

Personal data kept on the Hornet is stored and processed securely.[10] Hornet works with advocates on the ground to communicate localized safety tips.[11][12][13]

When a user shares their location, Hornet randomly obscures their distance as displayed in the app through triangulation.[14] Hornet also allows users to turn off its “show my distance” function.

In 2019, Hornet introduced a badge verification to help users find other authentic profiles, and get rid of spam accounts and bots.[15]

Hornet Impact[edit]

Hornet Impact was introduced to leverage its global reach to advocate for the health,[16] safety, social and economic justice of the LGBTQ community.[17] Hornet Impacts focuses on cultivating a community that celebrates all its queer members while providing our members with resources[18] and information.[19] Hornet works with partners on HIV research around MSM population size estimates,[20] PrEP,[21] and sexual and mental health.[22][23]
