Horse racing (software development)
Horse racing in software development is a strategy used by companies to build a product or feature with multiple teams, each assigned to build the same product or feature with slight variations, which are compared to see which one is performing the best. The versions are A/B tested and the version that has the better results is given more resources while the other versions are scrapped. The term "horse racing" is used to refer to this strategy because it involves teams competing against each other towards the same objective, like horses competing in a race.
ByteDance, a multinational internet technology company headquartered in China, is known to be one of the most aggressive in executing the horse racing strategy with TikTok. According to former ByteDance engineers, the company uses this strategy extensively to develop and refine its products. By using multiple teams to build the same product, ByteDance is able to quickly identify the most effective approach and allocate resources accordingly.[1] The Chinese ecommerce service Temu reportedly also uses this same strategy in software development.[2]
