Hospital 12 de Octubre

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Hospital 12 de Octubre is a University health campus managed by the Servicio Madrileño de Salud, the regional Public Health Service of the Community of Madrid and located on Avenida de Córdoba, in the Usera district, to the south of the city center of Madrid. It has a total of about 1,300 in-patient beds, including a major accident, incident and emergency unit with a helipad, extensive out-patient clinical services, major medical training installations and an innovative research institute all together constituting one of the largest and most wide ranging hospital services in Spain. It specializes in transplant surgery and cancer research.

History

The hospital was established on a huge site of about 200,000 square metres and first inaugurated on October 3, 1973, by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco and his minister of work Licinio de la Fuente, with the original name Ciudad Sanitaria First of October, referring to the date of the unlawful proclamation of Francisco Franco as Head of State on October 1, 1936. It became an independent university hospital with extensive training facilities in 1975 and is currently fully integrated into the Complutense University of Madrid.

After the dictatorship and the transition to democracy in December 1978 the site was renamed 12 October - which marks the discovery of America and is also the Fiesta Nacional de España, a national day.

Principal Buildings

The hospitalization facility (for in-patients) is an aging, four-wing, 15 floor building originally designed for 150 beds, now extensively refurbished with small suites designed for one patient which includes a private bathroom (although most have two patient-bed stations with separate fittings to cope with high demand situations). The central hall of this building provides a hub of the service of attention to the patient (for comments, commendations and complaints) and various registries, as well as a modest cafeteria and gift-shop. The emergency services are located in and around the south-west wing of this building, with special ambulance access from the main free-way.

The maternity building has 455 beds, 11 dilatation rooms, 5 pediatric and gynecological emergency rooms, providing care more than 8000 annual deliveries. On October 12, 1988

The ambulatory outpatient building is the most modern and integrates a wide portfolio of services, accommodating a large number of specialties, incorporating most modern medical technology for rapid diagnosis and effective treatment. It has six floors and is arranged in four interconnected blocks (A -D), with the ground floor accommodating several registration machines that print tickets confirming location and time of out-patient appointment ("cita" in Spanish). There is also a general reception and inquiry desk with several work-stations, a substantial cafeteria, access to subterranean parking etc.

There are also separate oncology services, a training pavilion, a medical research facility with eight laboratories as well as a bank, sports facilities and various carefully maintained gardens. Most buildings include short-term parking facilities for private cars, a cafe/restaurant for visitors and a small charity-shop selling newspapers and general goods. The subway and public bus-stops are a short walk away from the complex.
