Housatonic Valley Insurance (HVI) is an independent insurance agency located at 6 Main Street in New Milford, Connecticut. The agency was established in 1931 and was one of the founding members of the New Milford, Connecticut Chamber of Commerce later that year.

About the historic house[edit]

This historic colonial home, now owned by Housatonic Valley Insurance Agency (HVI) was built by Noadiah Mygatt in 1795. It is interesting to note that this house is located on the site of the first dwelling (a log cabin) that was erected by John Noble Jr., son of the founding father of the town of New Milford, Connecticut in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

This house was used all through the years, and at one point in time it was a coach stop and/or tavern. One of the partitions on the second-floor front of the house was constructed so that it could be swung upward, being on hinges and hooked up, to open up an area of the two rooms; used for meetings, dances, and other assemblies.

In 1929, the house was purchased by Sherman Canfield. Mr. and Mrs. Canfield kept riding horses in the barn behind the house; and enjoyed riding them for many years. In 1955, Housatonic Valley Insurance Agency purchased the house from the Canfields and converted the first floor for office use. In the early 70’s, the second floor was modernized for additional office space. In 1978, we enclosed the wood shed at the rear of the building and made an additional office. The entire building is now used for our insurance office.

Today, the house is highly visible on the New Milford, Connecticut Town Green located directly across the street from the town's gazebo and military tank. It's highly recognized for its classic exterior illumination during the Christmas season.

A little fact about the neighborhood: Next door at 10 Main Street where the Town Hall now stands, is the site where Roger Sherman’s home once stood between the years of 1721–1793. Roger Sherman was a signer on the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.

History[edit]

1931: Housatonic Valley Insurance Agency (HVI) was established in January of 1931. HVI was one of the founding members of the New Milford Chamber of Commerce later that year. J. Leo Murphy and Edward F. Plumb founded HVI on January 31, 1931. HVI originally leased office space in the “Bank Building” at 19 Main Street, which is now the home of a new banquet facility. The office remained at this location for more than 25 years.

1949: Of course, the ownership of the agency has had some changes since 1931, but those changes have been minimal. David Murphy joined his father in 1949.

1955: The agency bought their current home located at 6 Main Street, in the white colonial home next door to the Town Hall. The building, constructed in 1795 by Noadih Mygatt, was still being used as a private home by the Sherman P. Canfield family, who had owned the property for more than 50 years. HVI remodeled the building into office space, but has kept much of the character of the original building.

1960: David Murphy became president in 1960, and brought in James A. Winter, who joined the firm in 1961.

1979–1998: William Kamp was hired and became a partner in 1984 upon the retirement of David Murphy, and then became president of the agency in 1998. Also at this time, James Winter retired, and Brad Kamp joined his dad at HVI. In recent years: For many years, William and Brad had a professional relationship with Joe Cats and Sharon Chamberlin of Chamberlin & Cats Insurance Ageny. Sharon had been in the insurance business since 1980, and she joined Joe Cats in 1991 at Cats Insurance Agency, and then in 1994 Joe and Sharon formed Chamberlin & Cats Insurance Agency Inc.

2016–present: On January 1, 2016, William Kamp from HVI and Joe Cats from Chamberlin & Cats Insurance Agency retired. At this time, Brad Kamp and Sharon Chamberlin merged HVI with Chamberlin & Cats Insurance. Though the two businesses merged, they decided to keep the name Housatonic Valley Insurance Agency and keep the same location on the New Milford Green. Brad Kamp took over as President of HVI and Sharon now is Brad's business partner, co-owner & Vice President of HVI.
