House Conspiracy is an artist residency space based in Brisbane, Queensland. Established in 2016, the organisation primarily serves local emerging artists in developing new work across visual art, writing, and theatre.[1]

The space operates out of a Queenslander building, initially constructed for residential purposes in 1920.[2] The space underwent significant renovations in early 2017 in order to facilitate artistic practice.

In 2017, the organisation supported over 90 artists through the provision of space and funding, as well as facilitating a number of public exhibitions and interview-format podcasts[3]. In 2018, the organisation published its first book, The Conspirator[3], which documented the first year of official programming in the space.

History[edit]

The house at 42 Mollison Street was first built in 1920, and received multiple significant upgrades in 1929[4], 1944, and 1960.[5]. The house was first rented to House Conspiracy in 2017, at which time multiple renovations were undertaken by the organisation with the support of the owner.[6]

The organisation officially launched on February 3, 2017,[6] followed by a Welcome to Country the next day. Artists then moved in for three- or four-week cycles across the next twelve months, as part of an Emerging Artist Residencies program funded in part by Arts Queensland.[7] The residency program had one rule: each curated artist had to leave a physical mark on the space.[1]

On May of 2018, the organisation published The Conspirator, a 272-page book that documented the organisation’s first year, featuring work by all 90 artists the organisation curated, as well as an overview of the logistical operations necessary to run the first year of programming.[3]
