The Cusenza,[1] passing hundreds of years in different used dialects were also called Consentino[2] / Cosentino[3] / Consentia / Consentius / Consentinus / Crisenza and Cosenza. They were an Italian noble family, respectively an ancient Italic tribe called Bruttii and before the popular movement of Garibaldi called Risorgimento, they were also part of the Venetian nobility. In contrast the southern Italian Cusenza had the Title Barone di Billiemi[4][5] in additional and were a part of the Italian Barons.

Definition[edit]

The word Cusenza (kuˈsɛːndsa,[6] currently Sicilian dialect) is derived from the Latin word con-sentire, which means to agree, to bargain, to stipulate, convention.[7]

Origin[edit]

The Cusenza are one of the founding families of the city Cosenza (Latin: Consentia) in south Italy, which was created by an agreement of the Italic tribe called Bruttii in the 4th century before Christ.

Ancient Times[edit]

Begun with the creation of the city Consentia and the resistance of the Bruttii population against the later great power Rome, the alliance with Hannibal and with this related first defeat of the family, the Cusenza have been finally transformated to real Romans. Unsuccessfully the population hoped, always called Cosentini, to come back to peaceful times, however with the Roman Senate provocated act of German mercenary treason, who should save the roman Limes, new enemys reached the Italian region. Now the Roman Senate saw the fragility of the Roman Empire without possibility to do anything. The Empire, external conquerors set out, fought with the Antonine Plague and associated financial worries. Consentia, shaken by besiegements of the Saracen and Goths, forced the complete Family of the Cusenza to leave the region around Consentia for all times.[8] Henceforth Consentia began to get a plaything for outland powers. Extermination of memories[edit]

Domicile of the Cusenza Family in Cosenza. Lapis Bruttiorum.

After the fatal defeat of war against the Saracen the Saracens straited the Cusenza Family on the main road out of the city. After this dishonour there were no further action of the Cusenza Family to conquer the City back in their hands. The habitants of the Capital of Bruttium Calabria misunderstood this reaction and came to decision to make a referendum, if the Kings of Bruttium would be banished for all times. After it was clear to banish the Cusenza, all memories of the Family have been removed. Paperworks which contained the old name of the Cusenza (Consentia) were burned in this time. Only paperworks after this terribile time have outlasted. The Dynasty which has lead the population of Bruttium for nearly 700 years till this point was destroyed. Folk memory of the habitants of Cosenza is the only heritage. From Saracens destroyed domicile of the Cusenza was rebuild by the Saracens themselves. The Castle of the Cusenza had the name Lapis Bruttiorum, which means great stone of Bruttii. Nowadays this domicile is known as Castello Normanno-Svevo from Cosenza, which was rebuild by many conquerors.[9][10][11][12]

Middle Ages[edit]

The very old and genteel Family, domiciled in Sicily settled down in many regions of Italy in the course of hundreds of years. Related to the Cusenza Family have been persons like Giovanni Notaro from Messina with high virtues.

Ancient remains of the Borgo Cusenza 2012.

Today not properly called Borgo Cusenza, was a place already cited by Cordici (1586-1666) as “Bagghiu di l’Acci” and he stated the following: “There is no equal place in our territory like this feud (fego) where the cattle graze and give so sweet meat. In the underground there is a cave very deep and vast with dripping water, that percolating becomes like stone and seem to make white wax candles attached to the bed”. It is known that the Cusenza Family from San Vito lo Capo lived once here in 1820 (Vincenzo Cusenza) but maybe, before that date. This village was called Bagghiu di l’Acci for the near Mount Acci and its inhabitants got the name of accialori. For a long time and up to 1920/30 the Cusenza family lived in the village all the year around. After that date it was inhabited only for some period of the year; in fact women and children got up there from San Vito in summer and they stayed there up to December, for the wheat seeding. Also men after the seeding went down to town for not leaving the village unattended and went up again anytime they had to do some work in the fields. Only shepherds lived there steadily. About 14 families, formed of 40 persons, including women and children, lived in the village. It was a self-sufficient patriarchal society.
