The House of Saldanha is an extant Portuguese noble house patrilineally descended from Diego López de Saldaña, a Castillian nobleman who accompannied Infanta Juana of Castille to Portugal upon her marriage to King Afonso V, and later sided with the Portuguese in the War of the Castilian Succession [1].

Diego López de Saldaña had agnatic descendants through two of his sons, João and António de Saldanha. The former originated the senior line of the house, bearing the surname Saldanha da Gama, which held the title of Count of Ponte after inheriting it in 1756, upon becoming the genealogical successor to the agnatically extinct House of Torres.

The second son, António, was a notable navigator and colonial officer after whom Saldanha Bay and, indirectly, asteroid 1456 Saldanha are named. His many descendants separated into several cadet branches of the House of Saldanha. Most notable among his descendants is Marshal João Carlos de Saldanha Oliveira e Daun, 1st Duke of Saldanha, major figure in the Liberal Wars and four times Prime Minister of Portugal.

Members of several other Portuguese noble houses bore the surname Saldanha without belonging to the House of Saldanha, but by virtue of being cognatically descended from it, such as the Counts of Alcáçovas, the Counts of Galveias (after the 6th Count), the Counts of Farrobo (after the 2nd Count), and the Papal Count D. António de Almeida e Silva de Saldanha.
