"How You Get The Girl" is a bubblegum pop song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It is the tenth track of her fifth studio album, 1989 (2014) and its rerecorded version, 1989 (Taylor's Version). Lyrically, Swift gives tips on how to apologise to and win back a lover, a concept which she explores again in her song "betty".[1][2]

A snippet of the song was first teased through an advertisment for Diet Coke in partnership with Coca Cola.[3] It was then released in full on October 27, 2014, via Big Machine Records, as part of 1989.[4] After the album's release, Swift included the song on the set list of the 1989 World Tour in 2015.[5] That same year, she also performed the song in an intimate concert at the Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammys Museum in celebration of her "record-breaking attendance at the Grammys Museum".[6] In 2018, she performed an acoustic rendition of the track on June 16 at Dublin, Ireland during the Reputation Stadium Tour.[7] In 2023, the song was performed as a "surprise song" on The Eras Tour on April 30 at Atalnta, Georgia.[8]

Composition and Lyrics[edit]

"How You Get The Girl" spans four minutes and seven seconds.[9] It is a bubblegum pop song[10] in the key of F Major, with a tempo of 120 BPM. Swift has described the song as "kind of a tutorial" about how to win a girl back after a relationship turns sour.[11]
