Howie Wright (baseball)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Howard Irving "Howie" Wright (September 13, 1931 - June 5, 2009)[1] was a three-sport standout at Virginia Tech in the early 1950s. [2] Wright's accomplishments led to his selection to the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame; he was a member of its fifth class of honorees in 1986.[3] He originally was from Milford, Delaware.

He served as the co-captain of Virginia Tech's undefeated 1954 football team. [2] That year, he ran for 362 yards on 60 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns and caught one pass for a TD. [4] Wright was selected to play in the annual Blue-Gray college All-Star game in Montgomery, Alabama on Christmas Day of 1954. [5] He scored the only touchdown for the Gray team in the event, catching a 29-yard touchdown pass in a 14-7 loss to the Blue team in the nationally televised game.[6] He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL in 1955. In baseball, he guided the Hokies to the Southern Conference championship and to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance (1954), hitting .378, with five homers and 20 stolen bases that season. [2] He also wrestled at Tech and ultimately lettered in all three sports. [2]

He graduated in 1955 and then served two years in the Armed Forces, spending much of his time in Germany. He returned and went to work for Texaco, where he worked for 36 years before retiring in 1991. [2]
