Hugh Charles Welsh is an American lawyer and businessman who currently serves as the President and General Counsel for DSM North America.
Career
Hugh Welsh has over twenty years of professional law experience spanning across different functional departments. Before beginning his career at DSM, he worked for both McCarter & English, LLP and American Standard Companies where he served as Senior Associate and Associate General Counsel, respectively. Since 2007, he has worked at DSM North America's Parsippany location where he currently serves as President & General Counsel.[1]
During his career at DSM his responsibilities and disciplines have ranged from ethics & compliance, governance, risk management, government affairs, mergers, acquisitions & divestitures, securities, commercial contracting, communications, investor relations, litigation management, IP, labor, tax and regulatory affairs in the nutrition, food & beverage, pharma, biotechnology, medical device, chemicals, engineering plastics, clean energy and defense contracting industries. He is the executive sponsor of DSM’s Women’s Inspired Network and Mentoring Programs.
Personal life
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1966, Hugh is the oldest of 9 children. His family moved to Cranford, NJ when he was 2 years old. His father served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and later worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Hugh attended St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City. He started off his college career at Fordham University, where he was part of several student activities including acting in one of the lead roles in the Fordham Movie "The Poe Papers". Hugh transferred to UMass Boston during his junior year of college where he completed his undergraduate education. He then attended Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, Nebraska for one year. He completed his law degree at Seton Hall Law School in 1993, where he met his current wife Michelle Welsh. They have two children together, Tyler (23) and Caitlin (22), and currently reside in his hometown of Cranford, NJ.
