Hui Zhang is an American biostatistician and professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he is a faculty member in the Department of Preventive Medicine (Biostatistics and Informatics). He is affiliated with multiple research centers, including the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease, and is co-director of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Core for the Northwestern Brain Tumor SPORE. Zhang’s work spans statistical methodology, clinical trial design, and interdisciplinary applications in medicine.
Education and career
Zhang received his bachelor's degree from Nankai University in China and his PhD in statistics from the University of Rochester. After completing his doctorate, he held faculty positions at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital before joining Northwestern University.
Research
Zhang’s research contributions focus on statistical methods for biomedical research, including longitudinal data analysis, categorical and clinical trial data, and methodological work for imaging analysis.
His work has included contributions to the design and analysis of clinical trials and the development of statistical methods with applications in oncology and neurological disease research. For example, he has co-authored methodological research on quantifying protein co-localization in super-resolution microscopy, published in the peer-reviewed journal Statistical Methods in Medical Research.[1]
Zhang also participates in interdisciplinary research teams. In 2022, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine reported on collaborative research exploring immunosuppressive mechanisms of T-cell receptors, highlighting ongoing engagement with translational biomedical science.[2]
Professional service
Zhang has held leadership roles in the American Statistical Association (ASA). He served as president of the West Tennessee Chapter of the ASA, a position in which he helped coordinate outreach initiatives linking high-school students with professional statisticians.[3]
Media coverage
In 2022, BBC News Chinese published an article featuring statistical analysis and commentary on public health data, in which Zhang was quoted discussing the probability of new SARS-CoV-2 variant risks and implications for public health understanding.[4]
