Background[edit]

On July 13, 2016, the Eraserheads performed their final reunion together before 2022 at an event in Makati Shangri-La where PLDT and SMART unveiled their new logos.[1] Since then, rumors have been circulating about a potential reunion occurring following the one in 2016.

Prior to Game 2 of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Basketball Finals, a Twitter video was posted by Raymund Marasigan showing Marcus Adoro, Buddy Zabala, and a guitarist with blonde hair practicing the song Minsan. The blonde-haired guitarist was presumed to be Ely Buendia, leading to a speculation of of a reunion at the finals game. Buendia denied that he was the blonde-haired guitarist in video and debunked such possibility of a reunion.[2][3]

When questioned on Twitter on September 28, 2021, if a reunion was likely, Buendia replied, "Pag tumakbo si Leni" (If Leni runs), expressing his desire for then-Vice President Leni Robredo to run as president in the 2022 Philippine presidential election.[4] Although Robredo actually campaigned for the presidency, Buendia said that his tweet was a "half serious joke," and Marasigan, who deemed the tweet a "calculated" one, stated that he had no intentions to reunite at the time.[5]

However, on September 17, 2022, all members posted an image of the band's logo in their respective Instagram accounts, with Zabala and Adoro quoting a line from their song With a Smile.[6] Two days later, it was confirmed that the Eraserheads would reunite on December 22, with the poster showing the band recreating the cover of their debut album, ultraelectromagneticpop!.[7][8]

Rehearsals[edit]

The seven-day rehearsals were held in the Dolphy Theatre on the following dates in 2022:

  1. October 7[9]
  2. October 13[10]
  3. October 18[11]
  4. October 24[12]
  5. November 3[13]
  6. December 7[14]
  7. December 12[15]

Due to them playing together for the first time in more than 6 years, they had difficulty at first playing some of the songs, and some songs were modified compared to their original versions.[16] For example, they were helped by Jazz Nicolas of The Itchyworms, Mikey Amistoso of Ciudad, and Audry Dionisio of General Luna.[17] The 7th rehearsal became notable for being watched by members of the IV of Spades, including former member Unique.[18]

Controversy on Adoro's Inclusion[edit]

Upon the announcement of the reunion, Adoro's inclusion in the lineup received backlash from netizens due to resurfaced allegations of Adoro's alleged domestic violence toward his daughter, Syd Hartha, and ex-partner, Barbara Rauro.[19]

The other three members opened up regarding this issue. Marasigan, who expected that the reunion would receive some backlash, stated that he'd rather discuss the issue privately due to how easily public social media posts can be misinterpreted.[20] Buendia, through his manager, Diane Ventura, denied that the three were enablers, and one of his conditions to reunite was that Adoro's issues be resolved.[21] Zabala expressed support to the alleged victims and stated the decision to include Adoro didn't fall on them.[22]

Adoro issued an apology to Syd on his Instagram account.[23]

  2. This was due to Marasigan holding a camera and a wine glass onstage. Marasigan sang the lines:

'Yun pala, naging gano'n na rin ang tema
