Hulk speak

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Hulk speak[1] is a trope used in popular culture as a way to emphasise the lack of intelligence in a character, and in some cases accompanied with physical strength through the use of language. The characters may refer to themselves in the third-person perspective, and often substitute words such as "I" for "Me". The trope is named after the Marvel Comics character, Hulk. However this form of language has also been used in other pieces of literature such as adaptations of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and even films ranging from Labyrinth (film) and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Structure and use[edit]

Characters within any film or book that are generally considered physically strong but unintelligent (in some cases; either one) are subject to the aforementioned trope. The overall structure of this form of dialogue is not only through the use of third-person perspective, but also through skipping grammatical articles such as "a", "an" and "the". In other words, nouns and verbs remain the same but anything used to bridge sentences together are almost always absent which results in a character speaking shorter sentences, but still allowing them to get their point across. Furthermore, it's quite common for characters who speak like this to use words such as "Smash!" and "Puny", often possessing a somewhat limited vocabulary. The simple minded nature of the character translates to how the sentences are formed and what words are used.
