Human Rights Student Organization

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Human Rights Student Organization (HRSO) is a student-run, non-profit organization and NGO that aims to increase awareness of human rights issues in Qatar.

It is dedicated to promoting student involvement in national and international health and human rights issues, providing students with opportunities to tackle these issues, seeking to act on issues of social justice, and creating awareness through education and praxis.

Since the establishment of HRSO in August 2008, the organization has been working to raise awareness of various issues between the youth of Education City and the State of Qatar. HRSO has won several awards throughout its short yet powerful history.

Successful awareness-raising events, such as Global Pink Hijab Day and Break Your Nose, showed students that there were indeed problems in their community, and that there are ways to tackle these problems.

History

HRSO was established in August 2008 with an initial membership of only a handful of students.[1] It is a member of Qatar Foundation.[2]

Human rights youth conference

The 2010 Human Rights Youth Conference

The Human Rights Youth Conference allowed students to explore specific topics of concern in their community and gave them a chance to come up with a solution for the human rights problems faced in Qatar.

Unlike similar programs, such as the Model United Nations, the HRYC attempted to convince concerned parties to implement the solutions students come up with, while at the same time students achieved the goals established in the conference.

Throughout the conference, the students worked together and made the "2010 Human Rights Youth Goals" those goals are to be implemented by students all over the state of Qatar during the whole of 2010.

The official communication medium of the conference was English. English was also the language used in any documents produced by the conference. All participants were expected to be fluent in the language.

Objectives

The main objectives of the conference are:

  • To raise awareness over human rights and their importance in the society
  • To raise awareness over human rights problems faced in Qatar
  • Give students in Qatar the opportunity to make a tangible change
  • Give the students the opportunity to freely discuss current problems.
  • To set up "The 2010 Human Rights Youth Goals"

3. Logistics:

This committee is responsible for the logistics of the conference. Food, location and registration of the conference are all part of this committee. The logistics committee will also be responsible for the entire preparation prior to the conference.

4. Registration:

This committee is a small committee of four, where they are responsible for the whole application of the students to the conference, and the selection of the students. The registration will be done on the website, where students will apply, and then selected.

Format

The HRYC took place over two days in Doha, Qatar.

The first night was an introduction to the conference, and a chance for the students to get acquainted with each other.

The major activities happened over the course of the second day.

Students will be split into four groups.

Each group will address a specific topic with regard to human rights issues.

The group will also come up with a solution for the problem.

At the end of the day, all the groups will come together and share their future visions and project.

After the conference

Each group of students was assigned a project manager. The project manager will be responsible for keeping the students together, focused on their goals and projects. The projects that will be implemented will be carried out over the course of 2010.
