History

Humanculture is an Indigenous-led nonprofit organization operating internationally, incorporated in the United States as a 501(c)(3) public charity and in Canada under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. Our work focuses on expanding access to water, food, education, health services, economic autonomy, cultural preservation, and representation.

Founded in 2018 by Stephanie Zabriskie, Humanculture advances Indigenous and community-led work across essential access, knowledge systems, ecology, land stewardship, arts, culture, humanitarian aid, and climate resilience. We are dedicated to the life, land, and culture of African and Indigenous peoples in remote societies. We support communities that are often excluded from global visibility and resource access.

Humanculture operates across multiple regions across the Global South, including East Africa, North Africa, Central America, South America, and Southeast Asia. Our work is community-led and systems-oriented. It is grounded in Indigenous systems and local structures that already operate within these environments.

HUMAN RIGHTS. LIVING CULTURE..

Humanculture originated as Maasai Water Project through its work with remote pastoral Maasai communities in Tanzania to address water scarcity, education access and women's health and economic freedom. Maasai Water Project is the original and flagship initiative within Humanculture and continues to operate under Humanculture's governance in East Africa with local Indigenous leadership, fully aligned with Humanculture’s mission and standards.

In 2024, Humanculture produced The Untold Story Exhibition, an art exhibition held at One World Trade Center in New York City from March 8 to April 8, 2024. Curated by Stephanie Zabriskie, the exhibition was a unique opportunity to view and interact with culturally significant art, while supporting humanitarian work dedicated to preserving the life and culture of African and Indigenous peoples, particularly the Maasai society featured in the exhibition.
