Humanity Forward
Humanity Forward is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for “solutions to the biggest problems of the 21st century.”[1] Humanity Forward was founded by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who branded himself principally by his support for passing a universal basic income in his bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Since the organization’s formation in March 2020[2], amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the organization's focus has been on enacting direct cash relief to support American families who have found themselves without work, struggling to pay for basic expenses and experiencing poverty.
In November 2020, Humanity Forward launched a national advocacy campaign aimed at passing direct cash relief initiatives through Congress.[3] Citing widespread public support across the political spectrum for stimulus checks in support of bipartisan cash relief policies, Humanity Forward actively works with elected Democrats and Republicans in both chambers of Congress to achieve their advocacy goals.[3] In December 2020, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-De.) and Congressman David McKinley (R-Wv.) introduced a House version of the Coronavirus Assistance for American Families Act to deliver stimulus checks to American families, citing Humanity Forward as having played a role in the bill's creation.[4][5] The House bill, along with pressure for stimulus checks applied by Senators Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) led to the inclusion of $166 Billion appropriated for stimulus checks of $600 to American adults in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021.
In addition to their work in Congress, Humanity Forward's press secretary also revealed that the organization had discussed "direct recurring economic relief" with the transition team of President Joe Biden.[6]
Humanity Forward acknowledged their split from founder Andrew Yang to the press after his announcement that he would be running for Mayor of New York City[7][7]. On January 15, 2021, a Humanity Forward spokesman told the Washington Examiner, "HF does not support or endorse, and will not comment on or respond to any inquiries relating to, any political campaign or candidate for elected office."[8]
