The Humboldt-Institut - Verein für Deutsch als Fremdsprache e.V. is a non-profit association teaching German as a foreign language. It was founded in 1977 by its current director Mr. Norbert Güthling and has its headquarter in Ratzenried castle.[1]

The institute provides German courses for different age groups in Germany. It runs four boarding schools in Berlin[2], Constance, Lindenberg im Allgäu and Bad Schussenried that are open year-round.[3] As of August 2018, more than 60.000 students from over 160 countries have taken part in one of the Humboldt-Institut's German courses.[4]

The association is named after Wilhelm von Humboldt, a Prussian philosopher, linguist and architect of the Humboldtian education ideal. The Humboldt-Institut's stated philosphy is that students should learn a language in the country where it is natively spoken.[5]

The Humboldt-Institut is a certified test center for the TestDaF and telc Deutsch exams, which are required for higher education in Germany.[6] It is an accredited member of FaDaF, the German association for German as a foreign language.[7]
