Hunger problem in Bangladesh

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Introduction[edit]

Bangladesh is the 8th most populated country in the world with a population of 164,670[1] The country has been improving in the term of life expectancy, improving literacy and reducing child mortality, but the country still is not free from hunger- a basic human right and Sustainable Development Goal 2. A big part of the population earn their living from agriculture with total 9099(1000ha) agricultural land available in the country.[2] Though hunger or starvation is not listed among the top ten causes of deaths in Bangladesh, but part of the population still falls under malnutrition cycle.

Current Statistics[edit]

According to the World Health Organisation, in Bangladesh, children under five who are wasted are 22% of the total population, 16 million are wasted. These indicates an overall improvement from before, but the country still lags behind to achieve SDG 2 and 3 which are no hunger and good health and well being. According to Bangladesh Bureau Of Statistics the production of major crops( Rice, wheat and jute), has increased in last 45 years too many folds.[3] Despite of such improvement, Undernutrition and hunger still costs Bangladesh USD one billion per year in lost productivity, even more in health care system. [4] However, despite progress and the improved availability of food due to increased production, 40 million people – one quarter of the population – remain food insecure, and 11 million suffer from acute hunger.[5] 1/4 th of the population lives in food insecurity.[6]

Causes of hunger and malnutrition[edit]

In Bangladesh even the wealthiest household has 1/3 rd child under 5 who are wasted. Clearly under-nutrition is not a problem in poor family only. The main obstruction on the way to eliminate hunger and malnutrition is poverty and ignorance. Despite growth in wages over the past five years, food price spikes place balanced diets beyond the reach of millions, particularly the urban poor and rural landless. Most of the food deprivation is among the residents of Cox's Bazaar where lives migrant rohingya population and in the hill tract area. Lack of work and proper income leads a key role, but also natural disasters leading to scarcity of food and safe drinking water is also responsible for such condition. Food insecurity and vulnerability among ethnic group is noticed due to living below the poverty line.

Helps and Hopes[edit]

Many problems and obstructions are there to achieve no hunger and good health and well being for all, but there is still hope as many organisations are working very hard on this fundamental right. World Food Program has helped 155 million vulnerable and food insecure people, since they started co operating with the country on 1974.[8] The hunger project- a voluntary based organisation is working toward helping eradicate hunger and removing gender inequality in terms of hunger. Bangladesh government has taken initiatives to secure food for its growing population and it includes multidimensional nature of food security as including food accessibility, availability, utilization, and stability. Acknowledging the complexities of the concept, Bangladesh placed the focus mainly on food availability and utilization measures of food security. Food security strategy under the 7th Five Year Plan has been in line with the following objectives of the National Agriculture Policy-2013, National Food Policy (NFP-2006) and the National Food Policy Plan of Action.[9]
