Hussain Manawer is a British poet, writer and actor from Ilford, Essex.[1] In 2017, Manawer set the Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Mental Health Lesson in partnership with Kings College London and Hackney Empire.

Manawer has supported the likes of Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding and Oscar winning actress Cher.[2] Manawer has also shared global stages with leaders such as HRH Meghan Markle, Justin Trudeau and the late Kofi Annan.

Early life[edit]

Manawer was born in Newham, East London and then moved to Ilford Essex where he attended Valentines High School for both his GCSE's and A-Levels. He then went on to graduate from the University of Westminster with a BSC Honours in Quantity Surveying.[3]

In 2012 Manawer was selected by the London committee to become an Olympic Torchbearer for his local charitable efforts.[4]

Career[edit]

2019-Present[edit]

May 2021 Manawer appeared in the AppleTV+ Series ‘The Me You Can’t See’ hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. This series has five parts and involves notable figures such as performer Lady Gaga and actress Glenn Close.

Manawer performed on Sunday 30 June 2019 at the Glastonbury Festival on the Left Field.[5]

For the opening performance of the 2019 Soccer Aid Football Match, Manawer wrote and performed his poem, Game of Hearts to help raise donations for UNICEF.[6]

Manawer had also starred in a Lynx advert featuring Anthony Joshua, Jesse Lingard, Tinie Tempah, Calfreezy & Mo Gilligan in April 2019.[7]

Early Career - 2019[edit]

For the launch of London's night tube in August 2016, Manawer wrote, sang and performed in The Night Tube. The video consisted of individuals such as the London of Mayor, Sadiq Khan

Mental health campaign[edit]

Doctorate of Arts, Oxford Brookes University[edit]

In June 2019, Manawer received his Doctorate of Arts from one of the UK’s leading modern universities, Oxford Brookes University. The award was presented by the university’s Board of Governors. Manawer joined the faculty of English languages PHD students as he accepted his award.[8]

Hollyoaks[edit]

Manawer was drafted in by Bryan Kirkwood an Executive Producer for Hollyoaks for which a poem was produced to aid in the character Lily McQueen's death as a result of self harm resulting in sepsis. The final episodes were aired in April 2019.[9]

Guinness World Records[edit]

On 21 March 2017, Manawer alongside Professor Dame Til Wykes of King's College London taught a mental health awareness lesson at the Hackney Empire, London, UK. The total turnout was at 538 individuals made up from 14 local schools for which the lesson lasted 30 minutes.

A record was successfully set for the Largest mental health awareness lesson (single venue)[10]

One Young World Programme[edit]

In 2015, Manawer entered and won the international Kruger Cowne’s Rising Star Competition with the final being held in Bangkok, Thailand. Manawer final speech was on battling mental health issues.[11]

As the winner of the competition, Manawer will be travelling into space with XCOR Aerospace’s Lynx® Spacecraft.[12]

Downing Street[edit]

On Wednesday 10 October 2018, Prime Minister Theresa May awarded Manawer the 'Points of Light Award' on World Mental Health Day in recognition of his efforts in challenging the stigma of mental health on a global scale.[13]

Honorary Fellowship, Kings College London[edit]

Manawer joined a list of King’s Fellows in July 2018 for his work within Mental Health. Manawer joined the faculty of social science and public policy students as he accepted the award becoming Kings College’s youngest fellow.[14]
