huupe is a tech company whose main product, the huupe PRO, is considered the first smart basketball hoop.

History

huupe was founded by Paul Anton and Lyth Saeed, entrepreneurs from Wisconsin.[1]

Anton left Wisconsin to attend Boston College in 2012. Anton, Saeed, and Anton's brother Frankie stayed in touch by playing the basketball game HORSE and partaking in shooting contests via the exchange of Snapchat videos.

While in law school in San Francisco, Anton worked with colleagues to develop a real-time interactive basketball game called Real Shot. The game allowed basketball players to play against each other regardless of location.[2]

Real Shot required the use of Microsoft HoloLens glasses, which proved cumbersome for players. Saeed suggested incorporating an interactive backboard that would allow players to engage without the use of augmented reality glasses.

Product

In 2019, Anton and Saeed worked with engineers to develop an unbreakable and weatherproof glass backboard that could track statistics, play videos and allow for interactive play. The resulting product was named huupe, and it has been called the first smart basketball hoop.[3]
