Hytale is an upcoming sandbox fantasy role-playing game, currently in development by Hypixel Studios (the team behind Minecraft server Hypixel) which will be released for Microsoft Windows and macOS at an unknown date.

Gameplay[edit]

Hytale features a procedurally-generated fantasy world composed of blocks of numerous shapes arranged in a three-dimensional grid. The world features different randomly generated biomes, creatures, and dungeons. Players can participate in minigames similar to those found on the Hypixel server.[1] Players will be able to build and share mods and custom content using a set of browser-based and in-game tools.[2][1]

The adventure mode of Hytale includes procedurally-generated areas of the world known as "zones", made up of many biomes, blocks and mobs. This mode will feature RPG-styled combat for singleplayer and multiplayer and include dynamic boss encounters and dungeon exploration.

The game will support large community run servers,[1] and players can fight using a combat system built for multiplayer.

Hytale will feature block-based construction in both singleplayer and multiplayer, which includes many different world editing tools. It will feature a Java scripting system which allows players to create and execute code in-game, and in-game cinematic tools for video creators. It will also feature the Hytale Model Maker which is a 3D modeling, texturing, and animation toolkit running on HTML where players can create custom assets and import them into the game itself.[1]

Development[edit]

Hytale is developed by game studio Hypixel Studios in Quebec, Canada. The studio, specially founded for the development of the project, consists of about forty employees, split off of Hypixel Inc. which is the company behind the development of the Hypixel server.

Development of Hytale began in 2015.[3] Some details about how the game was progressing were announced in December 2016 on Hypixel's online forums.[4] The game was officially announced on 10 December 2019 in the form of a countdown on the Hytale website. On 13 December 2019, a trailer for the game was released, and amassed over 30 million views in the first month after its release.[5]

Hypixel Studios was at first self-financed due to the revenue generated by the Hypixel server. The studio subsequently received support from Riot Games, which invested several million dollars in the studio and the game,[6][7][8][9] with support from Riot Games and other developers including Dennis Fong, Rob Pardo and Peter Levine.[6]

Awards and nominations[edit]

In September 2019, Hytale was nominated in the 37th Golden Joystick Awards for "Most Wanted Game", with the comment that "Hytale is essentially [Minecraft 2] in nature".[10]
