IBC Airways Flight 405 was a flight from Las Americas International Airport to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. On December 2, 2013, the aircraft broke up in mid-air and crashed near La Alianza, Puerto Rico. Both crew members, the only people on board, were killed.[1]. The investigation concluded that the aircraft was overstressed and then broke apart.[2]
Aircraft
The aircraft was an Swearingen Metroliner build in 1986 and with serial number AC-654B. The aircraft then was delivered to Trans State Airlines. Then the aircraft was leased from British Aerospace to Mesaba Airlines. Then, in 1997, the aircraft was delivered to Merlin Airways. Then, in 1999, IBC Airways bought the aircraft. The aircraft had 14 years with IBC before the crash. The aircraft was equipped with two Garrett TPE331-11U-612G engines. The aircraft also had 33.888 flight cycles completed.[3]
Accident
The aircraft took off from Santo Domingo at 7:36 PM for a flight to San Juan. At approximately 8:08 PM, the last contact with the air traffic controller was made. Then, the aircraft started to dive, overspeed and then, the plane broke up. Both crew members were killed and the aircraft was destroyed.[4]
Investigation
The investigation concluded that the pilots used excessively the elevator during the rapid descend. The rapid descend caused the aircraft to overspeed and break apart.[citation needed]
