iBOOD (an acronym for Internet's Best Online Offer Daily) is a Dutch e-commerce platform that offers daily limited-time deals on branded products at significantly reduced prices. Founded on 26 September 2005 in Amsterdam by Jöran Prinssen and Dennis Sanders, it is widely regarded as the pioneer of the daily deal concept in Europe.[1] The company operates in six European countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Poland, and France.[2]
History
Founding and early growth (2005–2012)
Prinssen and Sanders were inspired by the success of the daily deal model in the United States. On 26 September 2005, the first deal went live on iBOOD.com.[3] The platform grew rapidly and expanded across multiple European markets. In 2008, iBOOD received the ComputerBild Testsieger (test winner) award in Germany.[3] In 2009, the company won its first Website of the Year (Website van het Jaar) award in the Netherlands.[4]
Ceconomy ownership (2013–2019)
In 2013, the Media-Saturn group (part of what would become Ceconomy AG), parent company of MediaMarkt and Saturn, first invested in iBOOD. In April 2015, the group acquired a majority stake through holding company Silver Ocean B.V.[5]
Management buyout and Walvis (2019–present)
The management buyout of iBOOD was completed on 29 August 2019. Founder and CEO Jöran Prinssen led the acquisition, with financial backing from Dutch technology investor Walvis Participaties, a firm founded by the J.A. Fentener van Vlissingen family.[6] At the time, iBOOD reported approximately 200,000 daily visitors and employed around 100 people across five European countries.[7] In November 2023, iBOOD announced its expansion into France.[2]
Business model
iBOOD's core model is based on limited-time flash sales of branded products at discounts of up to 80 percent. New deals appear on the platform each night at midnight and remain available while supplies last. The product range encompasses consumer electronics, household appliances, fashion, sports and outdoor equipment, home furnishings, and do-it-yourself products. In addition to the main daily deal, iBOOD offers supplementary sales formats including Flash Sales (multi-day offers), Hunt (an interactive bidding mechanism), and curated product collections.[1]
A distinguishing feature of the platform is the product forum accompanying each deal, where members can discuss the product and ask questions. For selected deals, brand representatives known as Product Experts are present to answer community queries directly. The platform operates through localised websites and a mobile application.[8]
Awards and recognition
iBOOD has won the Website of the Year (Website van het Jaar) award in the Netherlands more than twelve times, making it one of the most frequently awarded platforms in the country's largest online public vote for websites.[9] For five consecutive years, it won in the E-commerce category, and subsequently won multiple times in the Deals/Bargains category. In 2022, iBOOD was named the overall Website of the Year after nearly 500,000 Dutch consumers cast their votes.[10] In Germany, the company received the ComputerBild Testsieger designation in 2008.[3]
