IGBIS Committee of circa 2015 developed this logo

IGBIS is the acronym for the cataloguing and metadata description interest group of the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA).

The LIASA IGBIS Interest Group was first started in 2001 with a draft of the IGBIS interest group constitution. IGBIS is one of LIASA’s nine Interest Groups and the successor of the former Sub-Committee for Bibliographic Standards (SBS) and Interim Committee for Bibliographic Organisation (ICBO).

IGBIS was structured formally and properly during the LIASA Conference in 2002, hosted in the Eastern Cape Province of South Afroca. The existence of the Interest Group for Bibliographic Standards is rooted in the original Subcommittee for Cataloguing and Classification - established in March 1992 as a subdivision of the Committee for Bibliographic Organisation of the South African Institute for Librarianship and Information Sciences (SAILIS). In May 1994, the Subcommittee adopted the new name – Subcommittee for Bibliographic Standards (SBS) and continued to resort under the Committee for Bibliographic Organisation.

In anticipation of the dissolution of the South African Institute for Librarianship and Information Sciences (SAILIS), the Committee for Bibliographic Organisation became an independent body - Interim Committee for Bibliographic Organisation (ICBO) - that would serve as a transitionary measure between SAILIS (South African Institute for Librarianship and Information Sciences) and the new structure of LIASA.

The Sub-Committee for Bibliographic Standards continued to exist under the auspices of the Interim Committee for Bibliographic Organisation (ICBO) until the formation of the LIASA Interest Group for Bibliographic Standards (IGBIS) in 2002. Besides classification issues (using Dewey Decimal Classification), subject access issues (using Library of Congress Subject Headings) and matters regarding descriptive cataloguing (using Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition or AACR2), the Subcommittee clarified many concepts, terminology and coding questions during the development of the 2nd edition of the now defunct SAMARC (the South African Machine Readable Cataloguing format) through to the decision to adopt USMARC (later MARC 21) format by libraries in South Africa libraries in 1997 Many courses and workshops on bibliographic issues with emphasis on the application of AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules) were held in conjunction with tertiary institutes such as the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa to promote the correct use of bibliographic standards in libraries throughout South Africa.

The Interest Group for Bibliographic Standards of LIASA (IGBIS) aims to promote and facilitate the application of bibliographic standards in South Africa by creating platforms (talks, meetings and workshops) whereby people can share their experiences and exchange their ideas about bibliographic matters.

In a motion to the LIASA AGM in 2002, submitted by Tienie de Klerk, Elmare Broodryk, Joey van Zyl and Anne van der Walt, the IGBIS would operate under the umbrella of LIASA and serve as a forum for the alignment of bibliographic standardisation within South Africa, and broadly promote and facilitate the application of the bibliographic standards within the profession in South Africa.
