iGuzzini illuminazione is an international company working in the field of architectural lighting, and produces indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. It is the Italian leader in technical and architectural lighting and ranks amongst the leading companies in Europe.[1]

Having around 1,500 employees, its headquarters are in Recanati (Italy), and it operates in more than 20 countries spread across the five continents[2].

History[edit]

1950s

After the Second World War, on 30 June 1959, Mariano Guzzini’s sons, Raimondo, Giovanni, Virgilio, Giuseppe and Giannunzio founded Harvey Creazioni in a garage in the centre of Recanati. The company made artistic items from enamelled copper[3] and was named after Harvey, a 1950s film starring James Stewart whose best friend is an invisible giant rabbit called Harvey. Harvey later became the heart of the iGuzzini illuminazione company that began by manufacturing indoor designer lamps and then expanded to architectural luminaires.

1960s

As Italian design began to develop in Milan, iGuzzini rode the wave and started collaborating with famous architects and designers from all over the world.

1970s

By introducing the concept of lighting scenarios in the 1970s, iGuzzini brought lighting design to Italy. This soon became the focus of the company’s growth, which led to significant changes in both its distribution network and business model.

1980s

In 1988 iGuzzini began experimenting in photo-biology, studying the influence of artificial lighting on people’s psychological and physiological wellbeing (today referred to as Human Centric Lighting).

1990s

iGuzzini joined the fight against light pollution, an issue that became the cornerstone of the company’s communications and its commitment to improving the well-being of communities. With its lighting system for the Galleria Borghese, the company also launched Light is Back, a programme that seeks to enhance cultural heritage through light.

2000s

iGuzzini set up iGuzzini Lighting China Ltd to help its development strategy in the Asia-Pacific market, and then bought the Canadian company Sistemalux to consolidate its presence in North America[4].

In 2019 the iGuzzini company became part of the Fagerhult Group: the Swedes acquired iGuzzini for 385 million euros[5].

Application areas[edit]

iGuzzini lighting is geared to illuminate places of culture and work, retail environments, urban settings, large infrastructures, and hospitality & living contexts.[3]

Over the years iGuzzini has worked together with numerous designers, including Luigi Massoni; Gio Ponti; Bruno Gecchelin; Renzo Piano; Gae Aulenti; Mario Cucinella; Jean Michel Wilmotte; David Adjaye; Paul Andreu; Rem Koolhaas; Massimiliano Fuksas; Ron Arad; Daniel Liebeskind; Christian de Portzamparc; Richard Meier; Snøhetta; Norman Foster; Michele De Lucchi; Steven Holl; Skidmore Owings & Merrill; Herzog & De Meuron; Sauerbruch and Hutton; UN Studio; MVRDV; GMP etc.[6]
