IHV Premier League is an amateur ice hockey league in Victoria, Australia. It is the highest men's ice hockey league in the state and is governed by Ice Hockey Victoria (IHV). The league was established by the Victorian Ice Hockey Association in 1909 as the first ice hockey league in Victoria.[1]
The league is one level below the Australian Ice Hockey League with players rostered with some Melbourne Ice and Melbourne Mustangs playing in IHV Premier League. Clubs which participate in IHV Premier League are also required to provide teams in the lower senior divisions of IHV. No promotion or relegation exists within IHV, with players instead moving up or down divisions within their club based on ability.
Since the opening of O’Brien Icehouse in 2010[2], IHV Premier League has played only out of O’Brien Icehouse and currently plays on Friday nights from April / May to September. The top 4 teams at the end of the regular season qualify for finals. The grand final is played as a best-of-three game series and, since 1946, the H.H. Kleiner Trophy has been awarded to the champion.[3]
