IMPRV

IMPRV(an acronym for Identify, Measure, Process, Re-Think, and Validate) (pronounced Improov) is a healthcare continuous improvement framework and business engagement strategy designed to improve the patient experience, reduce operational waste, and transform organizational culture.

IMPRV was founded by Master Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, David Branch, Vice President of Quality & Performance Improvement at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake. The framework leverages industry-leading techniques and tools from Lean, Six Sigma, Process Reengineering, and Project and Change Management disciplines.

Identify

To clearly define the problem state and develop a solid business justification for executive and business sponsorship.

Key Activities:

  • Define the problem/opportunity
  • Launch the project and establish the project team
  • Conduct stakeholder and risk analysis
  • Create communication plan
  • Develop project charter
  • Initiate project plan and timeline
  • Understand the process at a high level

Measure

To thoroughly understand the current state of the process and collect sound data on process performance.

Process

To assess and analyze process data for root cause identification of waste and inefficiency.

  • Complete root cause analysis to identify issues and opportunities for improvement

Re-think

To architect a more efficient process and draft full scale implementation plan of improvement solutions.

Key Activities:

  • Assess implementation resource requirements
  • Develop implementation plan for the improvement solution
  • Implement pilot solution

Validate

To complete solution implementation, ensure process accuracy, and provide comprehensive training for improvement, sustainment and ownership.

  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures and/or Standard Work Instructions
  • Full-scale implementation of process improvement solutions
  • Confirm sustainment of improvement goals
  • Sustainability Review
  • Conduct Lessons Learned
