INS Abhimanyu
INS Abhimanyu is the main chariot base named after an elite fighter from the epic of the Mahābhārata and was established in 1974.
Historical Background
The emphasis gradually shifted to special operations, with a greater emphasis on low-intensity conflict and unconventional warfare. The Indian Maritime Special Forces (IMSF) was established in 1987 and is based with INS Abhimanyu. The acronym was changed to Marine Commando Force (MCF) to give it an element of personality. After this, the name of Marcos was taken. The unit is commonly referred to as Marcos West.
Role
On 1 May 1980, the Premier Chariot Base in Mumbai was commissioned as the permanent base for the unit. The uniqueness of the unit lies in its ability to operate in all three modes - sea, air and land. The MCF is specifically organized, trained and equipped to conduct special operations in the maritime environment. The personnel of the unit are deployed round the clock for anti-piracy operations in Goa, Somalia for CI/CT operations from Kashmir. The unit has always been at the forefront in providing diving/civilian assistance in times of natural calamity. The main works of Marcos include conducting covert attacks against enemy ships, offshore installations and other important assets behind enemy lines, countering terrorism in the maritime environment, etc.
Achievements
Soon after donning its colours, Marcos was baptized in the war in Sri Lanka during 'Op Pawan'. The journey was started from Sri Lanka and has continued unabated in many forms, and the force has participated in all major operations conducted by the Indian Navy(IN). The unit was highly successful in its capability during these operations and is the recipient of the highest gallantry award ever in the Navy. [1][2]
