INTERCONTINEN7AL

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

INTERCONTINEN7AL (pronounced "intercontinental") is a virtual band of international musicians that formed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating music with the use of the app BandLab.[1] The group consists of mostly amateur musicians who reside in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.[1] With the inclusion of two scientists who recorded instrumentation while stationed in Antarctica,[1][2] the resulting self-titled debut is possibly the first album of original music to feature parts recorded on all seven continents.[2][3][4][5]

History

In March 2020, members of the Columbia, Maryland rock band Toast (Jamie Miller, Ben Gaither, Emily Betz, Matt Smith and Becca Drayer) began seeking out methods to continue playing music virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and quarantines.[1][2][4] The band soon started using the music application BandLab to share music ideas amongst each other.[1][4]

A few months later, the band opted to publish internal song ideas out to the public BandLab community – making them available to any BandLab user to edit and contribute to.[1] Smith posted an instrumental acoustic song idea titled "Aslin" within the application, and shortly thereafter, several vocal tracks were received, including submissions by Hope Gray (from San Francisco) and Gustavo Prida (from Buenos Aires in South America).[1][6] The result was the song "No Somos De Este Lugar".[1] Toast band members continued this process, next posting a blues song idea from Smith and Miller for potential BandLab users external to the group. This song idea eventually became "When I’m Gone", featuring David Lee Rendon from Texas on vocals and Robert James Shoveller from Australia on lead guitar.[1]

Smith continued seeking out other musicians using the BandLab app, looking for further international cooperation and hoping to secure a musician from every continent to participate in a music project.[1][2][4][6] The growing virtual band of musicians was named INTERCONTINEN7AL, with the 7 influenced by the band Tool's song "7empest", and the concept of the band was inspired by the "Sonic Highways" album from the Foo Fighters. [1][2][5]

To recruit the remaining musicians on the project, Smith contacted friends, former bandmates as well as family members who were musicians (Devin Heritage, Alex Burke, Roy Colquitt)[1], and also leveraged features in BandLab to target by geographical location and instrument type (finding Josh Pearlson of South Africa and Dale Pearson of San Diego, CA).[1][5] Smith also researched musicians’ profiles of users that were commenting on tracks, as well as determining collaborators of existing band members (one example is Nerse of Asia).[1] European musician Marcin Nawrocki was recruited after Smith was notified that one of the band’s song ideas was flagged for collaboration.[1] To find the musicians from Antarctica, Smith reached out to numerous active research stations during the fall of 2020 to determine if there were scientists stationed on the continent who also happened to be musicians, and was successful in recruiting Aymar de Lichervelde and Stijn Thoolen.[1][2][5] The last song on the self-titled album, "Manor Hill", was created virtually among 14 band members across all 7 continents.
