The iPad Air is a line of tablet computers developed and marketed by Apple. It is a sub-series of the main iPad line of tablets, with lighter and thinner designs than the regular iPad and iPad Mini.
History
The first-generation Air was announced on October 22, 2013 and released on November 1.
The successor to the original iPad Air, the iPad Air 2, which included a faster A8X processor and Touch ID, was announced on October 16, 2014 and released on October 22, 2014.
The third-generation iPad Air, with an A12 processor, a larger 10.5-inch display and support for the Apple Pencil, was announced on March 18, 2019 and released on the same day.
The fourth-generation iPad Air, with a 10.9-inch all-screen display, support for newer accessories[vague] and a more powerful A14 Bionic chip.
The fifth-generation Air was announced on March 8, 2022 and released on March 18; improvements included an M1 chip (found in the earlier fifth-generation iPad Pro), a front camera with Center Stage technology and 5G support on cellular models.
The sixth-generation Air, with an additional 13-inch size in addition to the original 10.9-inch (marketed as 11-inch), a faster M2 chip and support for Apple Pencil Pro, was announced on May 7, 2024 and released on May 15.
The seventh-generation Air, which included a faster M3 chip, was announced on March 4, 2025 and released on March 12.
The eighth-generation Air, with an Apple M4 chip, was announced on March 2, 2026 and released on March 11.[citation needed]
Features
Software
The iPad Air line, as with all iPads, runs iOS (before 2019) or iPadOS (since 2019), both of which feature a touchscreen-based user interface. Every iPad Air model is shipped with several pre-installed applications (for example Safari, the App Store and Photos). Like every iOS device (including every other iPad model), content can be synced to a PC or Mac or through Apple's iCloud online service. Although the iPads were not designed to make use of telephone calls over a cellular network, users can still perform phone calls over Wi-Fi and VoIP services, such as the FaceTime application.[citation needed]
The aforementioned App Store application allows users to download additional applications to their device. Optional apps that can be downloaded from the App Store include GarageBand, iMovie and the iWork office suite (comprising Pages, Numbers and Keynote).[citation needed]
Additionally, in extension to the App Store, ebooks are accessible via the Apple Books service. Users can access books in ePub and PDF format, and can buy ebooks via the included bookstore or import their own from the device.[citation needed]
Starting with iOS 9 (and expanded with iPadOS 16 and 26), users can access multitasking controls on the iPad Air. iOS 9 brought multitasking features like Slide Over (one app windowed over another), Picture-in-Picture and Split View (two apps running side-by-side). The latter could only be accessed by the iPad Air 2 or later. iPadOS 16 added the Stage Manager windowing system to the fifth-generation Air, which featured an Apple M1 chip. iPadOS 26 removed all previous windowing options except Stage Manager and introduced a completely new macOS-style windowing system to every supported iPad Air.[citation needed]
The current version of iPadOS, iPadOS 26, was released in 2025 and is supported by every iPad Air model from the third-generation onwards. The first-generation Air came pre-installed with iOS 7 and supported through iOS 12.5.8.[citation needed]
Hardware

The design of the iPad Air has varied but there have been two main designs. The first design features four buttons, including volume up/down buttons, a power button and a "Home" button, the latter of which returns the user to the home screen. There is also a Lightning port below the display which is used for charging the device. This design was used in the first three iPad Air models, though the third-generation iPad Air's design is slightly larger than the first two models.[citation needed] A newer design, introduced with the fourth-generation model, removes the Home button at the front of the display and thins the screen bezels to achieve an all-screen display. With this design, the 3.5 mm headphone jack was also removed and the edges of the device were made flat rather than curving to the back. This design is used in every model since the fourth generation.[citation needed] Additionally, every iPad Air model except the first features Touch ID biometric authentication.[citation needed]
Every iPad Air model uses Apple silicon as its processor, with the first-generation model using the Apple A7 processor (also used in the contemporary iPad Mini 2). Since the fifth-generation model, every model uses an Apple M-series processor (the same processors used in Mac computers), with the latest model using the Apple M4 processor.[citation needed]
The display of every iPad Air model is a Retina display, featuring a high pixel density compared to previous displays (for example the displays used in the iPad 2 and iPad Mini (1st generation)). The displays have gained additional features over time; the iPad Air 2's display features anti-reflective coating and its successor's display utilizes a wider color gamut, features "True Tone" (which adapts the display's color balance based on light intensity) and was enlarged to 10.5 inches. The fourth-generation model features a larger 10.9-inch "Liquid Retina" display which went unchanged until the iPad Air (M2), when a second 13-inch size option was introduced alongside the usual 10.9-inch (marketed as 11-inch) size.[citation needed]
