ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 Artificial Intelligence is a standardization subcommittee of the Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1 of the International Organization for Standardization(ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 develops and facilitates the development of international standards, technical reports, and technical specifications within the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The international secretariat of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), located in the United States of America. The Chairperson of SC 42 is Wael William Diab.[1] The first meeting of the committee took place in Beijing, China in April 2018.[2] SC 42 established one working groups and three study groups. In May of 2018, the JTC 1 Big Data work program under JTC 1/WG 9 was transferred to SC 42 and WG 9 was dissolved. SC 42 meets face-to-face twice a year in a opening and closing plenary format with its subgroups meeting concurrently during the week.

History[edit]
ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 was formed at the October 2017, 32nd JTC 1 Plenary held in Vladivostok, Russia. The subcommittee was established via Resolution 12 from this meeting as a system integration entity for Artificial Intelligence. The resolution also appointed Mr. Wael William Diab (US) as Chair of the committee.[4]
In November 2017, ISO TMB and IEC SMB ratified the JTC 1 proposal to establish SC 42. ISO was assigned as the administrator of the committee. Ms. Heather Benko (ANSI) was appointed as the Secretary.
In December 2017, the first meeting was announced for April of 2018. The inaugural meeting was held in Beijing, China on April 18th – 20th, at the end of which an initial structure for the program of work was established.[5] In addition, a resolution (SC 42 Beijing Resolution 1) to endorse the JTC 1 resolution (JTC 1 Vladivostok Resolution 13) to transfer the Big Data work program from JTC 1/WG 9 to SC 42 was passed. Based on the two resolutions and in consultation with the TMB Secretary, the JTC 1 Secretary transferred the Big Data program of work to SC 42 on May 7th 2018 and JTC 1/WG 9 was disbanded. [6]
