ISOLAS is the oldest law-firm in Gibraltar, originally founded in 1892 by Horace Parody. Today, ISOLAS employs around 70 people.

The firm is ranked ‘Band 1’ by the Chambers and Partners guide.[1]

History[edit]

Early history and foundation[edit]

ISOLAS was founded in 1892 by Horace Parody,[2]and the firm’s name can be traced back to the Isola family, who arrived in Gibraltar from Genoa in the 1770’s.[3][4] The Isola married into the Parody family, a noted legal family, at the end of the nineteenth century. Parody continued to oversee the practice until his death in 1921, when he was succeeded by his nephew and partner Albert Isola QC, who gave the practice the Isola family name. The practice was restructured as a partnership in 1947, when Albert’s son, William, joined the business and operated from their family home on Bell Lane.[3] During his life, William was a member of Gibraltar’s City Council (1958 - 1969),  a member of the Gibraltar House of Assembly (1969 -1976) serving as a Government Minister (1969 - 1972). William died in 1993.

William Isola was succeeded by his brother, The Hon Peter J Isola OBE, who served until his death in 2006. In addition to serving as senior partner at the firm, Isola was active in Gibraltarian politics for more than 30 years, serving in Government as well as leading the opposition.[5]

Isola was succeeded by his son, Peter A. Isola, great great nephew of Horace Parody, who today leads the firm as senior partner.[2][6]The firm assumed its current name in 2007, having been known as Isola & Isola since 1950, when Peter J Isola first joined the firm.[3] In 2014, the firm appointed Marcus KIllick OBE as CEO who has held various senior roles at Gibraltar Financial Service Commission, KPMG and Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.[7]

Services[edit]

ISOLAS is a full service law firm, with the gaming practice serving clients including Entain and BetVictor. Peter A. Isola, the firm's Senior Partner, serves on the boards of multinational firms such as Entain and BetVictor, as well as Gibraltar International Bank.[8][9]

ISOLAS is regularly identified as a major offshore law firm,[10] often included in the Offshore Magic Circle.[11]

In addition to the firm’s headquarter in Gibraltar, ISOLAS also maintains an office in the Spanish town of Sotogrande.

ISOLAS is closely associated with Fiduciary, one of Gibraltar’s leading fiduciary practices, that works closely with the firm. Fiduciary works with clients across a wide range of fiduciary tasks, including compliance, HR, estate planning, and shipping and maritime.[12]
